MOSCOW (AFP)--Russia's Defense Ministry vowed Friday to protect its citizens in the

breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia after Georgian forces attacked the capital of the Moscow-backed province overnight.
"We will not allow the peacekeepers and citizens of the Russian Federation to be hurt," the Defense Ministry statement said.
"The Georgian leadership has launched a dirty escapade. The blood that has been shed in South Ossetia will be on the conscience of those people and those who surround them," the statement said.
