BAKU, Aug 1 (Reuters) - Azerbaijan's central bank has called on local banks to halt operations with payment transfer company, Western Union because it operates in Nagorno-Karabakh, a source close to the central bank said on Friday.

The source said the recommendation also applied to Western Union's smaller peer MoneyGram.

"Despite repeated requests from the central bank to stop money transfers to the occupied territories, Western Union and MoneyGram continue their operations in Nagorno-Karabakh, which we consider inadmissible," a central bank official who asked not be named, told Reuters.

"In connection with this, the central bank of Azerbaijan has recommended the country's banks to halt operations with these companies until the situation clarifies," he added. (Reporting by Lada Yevgrashina, writing by Tanya Mosolova, editing by Melissa Akin and Gerrard Raven)
